In August 2003 we were introduced to a group of descendants who had been fighting to establish a formal cemetery immediately west of the Rossdale EPCOR site. The descendants (Blackfoot, Cree, Metis, Scots and French) had been working together for three years on the difficult process of reclaiming this ancient burial ground.
Due to numerous delays, and the dur to desecration of human remains with past developments, there was an understandable distrust of authority that was specifically directed towards government agencies and utility companies.
Not only were we able to earn the trust and confidence of the group, we met all the rules, regulations, and protocols and created a solution that garnered enthusiastic approval from all parties involved.
Many of the design elements used make reference to the cultural heritage of the descendants.
- Circle of Plinths - the healing circle with openings to the four cardinal directions, designates a common ground.
- Prow of a Boat - intends to landmark the North Saskatchewan River as a significant crossing point.
- Metis Infinity Symbol - marks the path around the Memory Garden and symbolizes the coming together of two people forever.
- Broken Cross - to remain fragmented until all of the fences can be removed and the ancestor's remains can lie together in unity.
