Background

Richard was born and educated in England, having studied architecture at the Oxford School of Architecture, and graduating in 1976. Richard worked for a year as a graduate architect for the British Government. For six years he lived and practiced architecture in Hamburg, West Germany, working on a variety of institutional projects.

Richard came to Canada in 1982 and for three years worked as a volunteer in the First Nation community of Wabasca in Northern Alberta. In 1987 he began work with Vivian Manasc in the architectural firm FSC Groves Hodgson Manasc, and co-founded his own practice, Manasc Isaac Architects Ltd. in 1997.

Richard is the Principal-in-Charge of Design and, as well as keeping an overview of all the firm's projects, operates as Design Architect on specific projects. For Richard, there are no template solutions to design problems Richard as well as the whole firm is always fully conscious of budgets and schedule restraints; these are considered challenges rather than negative impacts.

Of paramount importance to Richard is to create buildings that will have zero impact on the environment, through an integrated design process of architecture and engineering. The sustainable (self-sustaining) building is architecture's gift to global ecology.
